Hand engraving requires a goldsmith to use steel gravers to cut patterns directly into the metal surface by hand - a skill requiring years of training that very few contemporary craftspeople possess at a high level. Every cut is unique and irreversible, making each hand-engraved piece a one-of-a-kind artifact. Machine engraving and laser engraving can approximate the look but cannot replicate the depth, variation, and genuine craft of hand engraving.
