Q&A
What is a boulder opal and how does it differ from other opals? Boulder opal is a natural opal formation found embedded in ironstone host rock in Queensland, Australia - the opal forms in thin seams within the ironstone matrix. The ironstone backing gives boulder opals exceptional durability compared to other opal types, and the natural ironstone host becomes part of each finished stone, making every boulder opal completely unique in its pattern of play-of-color.
