What causes alexandrite's extraordinary color change? Alexandrite's color change is caused by a unique arrangement of chromium atoms in the crystal structure - chromium absorbs light across both the red and green portions of the visible spectrum simultaneously. Under daylight's blue-rich illumination the stone appears green; under incandescent light's red-rich illumination the same stone appears red-purple. No other gemstone produces this specific combination of factors at the same intensity.
