What is alexandrite and what makes it so rare? Alexandrite is a color-change variety of chrysoberyl that appears green in daylight and shifts to purple-red under incandescent light - one of the most dramatic optical phenomena in all of gemstone science. Natural alexandrite of gem quality is among the rarest minerals on earth, found primarily in Russia's Ural Mountains, Sri Lanka, and Brazil. Fine alexandrite over 1 carat is rarer than ruby, sapphire, or emerald of comparable quality.
